Albert Hall © Tourism Tasmania and JP & E BakerThe hub of Tasmania’s northern region, Launceston is located 64km from Bass Strait in the wide river valleys where the North and South Esk Rivers meet to become the Tamar River. The many well-established public parks and beautiful private gardens have given Launceston the name ‘The Garden City’. Its showpiece, Cataract Gorge, is only a few minutes from the city centre. The city was established in 1806 as the state’s northern military base and as a trading centre for wheat and wool farmers. Their wealth is reflected in the beautiful Edwardian architecture. It also has one of the best regional galleries in Australia, the Queen Victoria Museum, and is renowned for its art and craft galleries and restaurants. In its heyday, Launceston was a very progressive city being the first city in Australia with electric lighting.

Nearby towns include Bridport, Deloraine, Devonport, George Town, Hadspen, Hobart, Scottsdale, Westbury.
